Old Testament Lesson

One of the things we see with God's promises to His people is that they will be a blessing to the world.  He is blessing them, He is using them, so that they will be a means of light to other people.  He wants His people to be means of grace to others.

So is it with us. The great things God has given us, His love, His mercy, and grace, He has given them so that we can be a means of grace to others, a way to help others, show them His love.  He has blessed us so we can be a blessing to others.

New Testament Lesson

Paul reminds us today that if salvation comes through the law, then Jesus came for nothing.  It is through grace, not works.  That's really then entire point of Galatians.  We don't earn God's love.  We don't make God love us.  He just does. That's why it's called grace.

Gospel Lesson

We see the tragic end of John's life in the passage. Remember, John was Jesus' cousin, he was close, he was a friend.  Remember that through Jesus, God knows what its like to suffer pain, tragedy, and loss.  Through the pain of losing a friend, God understands the pain of our loss.  Just as we know that hurt, so does God.

We can rejoice that we serve a God that is not foreign to us, but one that understands life, love, and hurt.
